The Scarlett Restaurant, Part of the Harbour Rocks Hotel. The Rocks, Sydney
It’s been awhile since I’ve ventured out to the Rocks. It’s such a beautiful & historical part of Sydney that’s sometimes overlooked when seeking out places to wine & dine. Since changing jobs last month – media by day, exotic dancer by night 😉 . I’m now based on the cusp of the Rocks, where I will be exploring and familiarizing myself with my new surroundings.
One of my most recent discoveries is the Scarlett Restaurant, a charming and sophisticated restaurant hidden away beneath the Harbour Rocks Hotel.When I walked down Harrington Street I missed it at first, after walking back slowly a second time I noticed the grand wooden doors. Inside I was greeted with a warm embrace “Hello young lady” said to me, “come on it, take a seat!”. It was like walking into a charming old fashion library in someone’s home. So cosy and Inviting, like a hug.Walking in a little further the library was extended out to Eric’s bar which led me downstairs to the restaurant.
Having read online that the hotel was once a hospital back in 1900, built by convicts, I didn’t expect it to be so sophisticated and chic. I was greeted by Matt, our waiter for the night. I ordered a glass of Cape Barren, Native Goose‛ Shiraz (which was perfection) while I perused the menu and waited for my girlfriend. The vibe was casual, the music was chilled out and given it was 6.30pm on a Thursday night the place was fairly quiet, so when Tess arrived we knew we had to use our polite indoor voice and laugh. Tess is really loud hahha (You are!)
When it came to ordering, my diet was booted out the door and ordering privileges were passed on to my appetite. Good call me. The food was amazing! We started with a beautifully presented cheeseboard ($19) of Pyangana Cheddar, Jennai Bouche Noir and Mountain Man Wash Rind, served with grapes, strawberries, walnuts, quince paste and lavosh. Odd choice for an entree but I couldn’t resist. Rookie error! I filled up way too fast. For our official entree we had the Pan Fried Octopus served with chorizo, coconut gel, herb salad and chilli dressing. We also shared the Braised Beef Cheek. I have a slight obsession with beef cheeks, if it’s on the menu I will get it! It were served with jerusalem artichoke and smothered in fried truffle butterrrrr! So good. Both were $18 and large entree portions. For main (by this stage I was bursting!) we had the Roast Beef Fillet ($38) sautéed mushrooms, bone marrow, asparagus and potato. There were so many interesting textures on the plate – tender beef, soft mushrooms and creamy marrow- all worked really well together. My absolute favourite dish was the Miso Glazed Salmon ($32) served with an eggplant puree, chilli prawns and sesame crumb – such an interesting take on a standard dish. The sweet and savoury miso flavour was combined with salmon cooked to perfection dipped in sesame crumps.. God Damn! It was delish!. The portion sizes overall were really substantial. We walk out of there flies unzipped, stomachs full and completely satisfied See menu here.
The service was really great – we loved Matt! He was extremely knowledgable, friendly and made some great recommendations
It’s open for breakfast and dinner seven days a week. It’s usually quiet on weeknights and picks up on the weekend. Breakie Menu here.
Available to hire
Several parts of the restaurant are available for hire. The actual dining area fits around 35 people, it’s the perfect location for an intimate sit down dinner or cocktail event, I can definitely see myself having a birthday party here (min spend $2,500). The gorgeous fairy-light lit terrace fits 50 people and comes with a canape menu package (min spend $3,000). There’s also a private dining room that seats 16 people, its can also be hired as a conference room min spend (min $1,500) Enquire here
I would recommend the Scarlett restaurant for the food and service! The beef cheeks and salmon would be my ‘go to’ dishes. It’s a great place for an intimate date night as it is fairly quiet depending on the night you dine, so make sure your pick a date with great conversation!
