North Bondi Fish, Bondi Beach

I admit I can be very judgemental at times… not my best quality, but I make up for it in other ways ;) Upon my first visit here in Feb 2014, my expectation was too high. I didn’t really give it a chance (The hype is to blame), also being a HUGE fan of Chiswick (another Matt Moran and Peter Sullivan creation) and having a fond spot for North Bondi Italian, the predecessor (…even though the service was unsatisfactory at the best of times) – it didn’t help either.
I recently went back (Sep 2014) and it’s not often I feel this way – but I was wrong and here’s why…

Vibe
Depending on what day/night you go, the vibe differs. On the weekend, this bright, airy and breezy boathousesque restaurant is filled with beautiful Bondi grassy knoll migrants – You can basically expect the same vibe and crowd as North Bondi Italian. The first time I came here was with my gorgeous girlfriend Lisa, for a post around-the-world-in-3 weeks lunch time catch up and it was the perfect way to take in the beach view, chat, people watch and enjoy a few delicious cucumber spritz cocktails.

On a weeknight (say Wednesday) it’s a bit quieter, slightly older and more laidback. The mood lighting (which is deceivingly flattering after a long day at work hehe), the spaced out seating arrangement and soft tunes, creating the perfect date night vibe… all you need is a fun date  – You nailed it Mr P! ;)

Spend
Somewhere between $$ and $$$ depending on what you order

Dress code
The dress code is generally relaxed but polished, it’s a fine balance. You don’t want to look too “done”. For lunch, I would personally skip the heels unless its for a special occasion of some sort, even then I’d make sure I’m balancing out my heels with a simple and effortless ensemble. For dinner, same approach applies plus heels.

Food
On my first visit to start, Sydney Rock Oysters, the Battered Flathead Fillets and Crumbed Calamari Rings and a few cucumber spritz cocktails (very refreshing!) … The meal was as expected, I put that down to my unadventurous selection of food.
On my second visit I was really impressed! I couldn’t get enough of the oregano and lime Split King Prawns. The garlic Moreton Bay Bugs were soft and juicy. The Scampi Ravioli was a little cold when served but a nice side dish to share. The Mahi Mahi was exceptional. My favourite was the soft shel crab bun (a *special*). I was compulsively mmmm-ing and ahhhh-ing :/ The donut balls with camaralised apple and cinnamon ice cream were a perfect way to end a meal.

My opinion of this place has definitely changed. Now that summers here, I’m really keen to go back for more…the crab linguine or the king salmon perhaps?
